Automobile Desk: The last month i.e. September 2026 was very busy for the Indian automobile market in terms of sales. In the car buying environment just before the festivals, customers have expressed the most confidence in the premium hatchback and compact SUV segments. If we look at the sales figures revealed by the industry, this time Maruti Suzuki's popular hatchback Baleno has left everyone behind and taken the crown of the country's best-selling car. At the same time, compact SUV vehicles of Tata Motors and Maruti also maintained their strong hold in the top 5.
Maruti Baleno's dominance at number 1
Maruti Suzuki's premium hatchback Baleno has emerged as the first choice of Indian buyers in the month of September. The company has sold a total of 25,392 units across the country last month. If we compare this with the figures of last year i.e. September 2025, when 13,173 units were sold, then there has been a huge jump in the sales of Baleno. This car is continuously attracting customers due to its premium cabin, good mileage and easy driving for everyday use.
Tata Nexon occupies second place
Tata Nexon, which has made its own identity in the compact SUV segment, stood second in terms of sales. Although its sales figures have seen a slight decline compared to last year, its demand remains dominant. Last month, 20,456 units of Tata Nexon were delivered, whereas in September 2025 this figure was 22,573 units. Due to its excellent build quality, safety ratings and a variety of powertrain options, it still remains the first choice of family car buyers.
Tata Punch remained at third position
Tata Motors' micro/compact SUV Punch has also recorded excellent performance on the sales front. A total of 20,333 units of this car have been sold during September 2026. At the same time last year, this figure was 15,891 units, which means that Punch has registered a very good growth in annual sales. Having SUV-like stance and premium features at a budget-friendly price is a major reason for its success.
Maruti Franks dominates the fourth position
Maruti's crossover-style compact SUV Frontx has secured the fourth position. Last month, the company sold 19,282 units across the country. The Francois has registered a strong growth this year as against 13,767 units sold in September 2025. Thanks to its sporty design and modern cabin layout, it is becoming increasingly popular among the youth.
Maruti WagonR remains at fifth position
Maruti Suzuki WagonR, which has been ruling the Indian roads for years, is still living up to the trust of the customers. Last September, 18,835 customers of WagonR took delivery of it. In the same month last year, this number was 15,388 units. Due to its tallboy design, more cabin space and low maintenance cost, it continues to be a craze in both family and commercial segments.
