Automobile desk: The popularity of electric vehicles in the Indian automobile market is continuously touching new dimensions. If we look at the recent figures, about 30 to 35 thousand electric vehicles are being sold in the country every month. Statistics show that in the last month i.e. September, retail sales of EVs increased to the level of 35,995 units, which shows an impressive growth of 94 percent compared to the same period last year.
This has been the fourth consecutive month when the demand for electric vehicles has crossed 30 thousand. The special thing is that the inclination of Indian customers is no longer limited only to electric hatchbacks or SUVs, but electric models are also gaining a strong hold in the premium and luxury class. In the month of September itself, about 975 luxury electric vehicles were registered, which has increased by more than 60 percent compared to last year.
In this rapidly changing premium segment, JSW MG Motor India's new bet MG M9 has emerged as a major contender. The sales figure of this limousine style MPV, which was introduced through the brand's special premium channel 'MG SELECT' in July 2025, has so far crossed 3,000 units. More than 2,100 units have been sold in the current year alone, taking its average monthly sales to around 300 vehicles. As the country's first all-electric luxury MPV, the MG M9 has carved a niche for itself in the market.
The cabin of the vehicle has been specially designed keeping in mind the preferences of customers who want maximum comfort during their journey. The presidential seats given in it can be adjusted in 16 different ways. These seats also have the feature of heating and ventilation along with 8 massage modes. Along with keeping the cabin environment cool, it has been provided with a yacht-style dual sunroof which lets in ample light. To make the night journey pleasant, 64-color ambient lighting and 13-speaker premium audio setup has been provided, which is connected with subwoofer and amplifier. All these features can be easily operated through the control panel installed on the armrest.
Cognac brown leather and suede finishing has been used inside the cabin. Talking about space, it has a boot space of more than 1,720 liters, while a trunk of 55 liters capacity is also provided in the front. Full attention has also been paid to digital connectivity; Separate entertainment screen, tri-zone climate control, PM2.5 air purifier and MG's connected car technology have been provided for the rear passengers. Through this technology, users can avail the benefits of geo-fencing, remote car control, live diagnostics and over-the-air (OTA) updates.
In terms of performance, the MG M9 has a 90 kWh capacity NMC battery, which claims to give a driving range of about 548 kilometers on a single full charge. The electric motor installed in it generates power of 245 PS and torque of 350 Nm. With the help of fast charging technology, its battery can be charged from 30 to 80 percent in just 30 minutes. Apart from this, it also has 'Vehicle-to-Load' (V2L) feature, through which the vehicle's battery can be used to power other electrical equipment.
In terms of design, this model is available in Pearl Luster White, Metal Black and Concrete Gray colors. The front profile features a huge trapezoidal grille, split LED headlights and connected DRLs, while the rear section gets waterfall style taillights. The vehicle uses 19-inch Conti-Seal self-sealing tires that automatically seal small punctures. It also gets heated outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs) for clear visibility in inclement weather.
On the safety front, the MG M9 is built on a robust and ultra-high-strength steel body shell. The car has been provided with 7 airbags for safety and has achieved 5-star safety rating in Euro NCAP and ANCAP crash tests. Additionally, it also gets modern safety features like Level-2 ADAS and Driver Monitoring System, which reduce the chances of accidents during long journeys.
The Indian market already has established models like Toyota Vellfire, Kia Carnival, Lexus LM 350h and Mercedes-Benz V-Class, but this is the only luxury MPV to come with a pure electric powertrain. According to industry data, total luxury MPV sales have reached 4,061 units in FY26, up from 1,061 units in FY24, increasing the segment's market share from 2.3% to 7.2%. This growth clearly shows that customers looking for more comfort in heavy city traffic and long journeys are now preferring such luxury MPVs over traditional SUVs.
