What China's estimates say about India and what other reports say about India
Compiled & Presented by Vicky Mehta
india economy Therefore, the new estimate of IMF gives a good indication. According to the news published regarding the report of 13 October 2026, IMF has increased India's growth rate for 2026–27 from 6.4% in July to 7.0%. The estimate for 2027–28 has also been increased from 6.7% to 7.0%. Therefore, the organization now expects India's growth to be higher than previously thought.
At the same time, IMF has reduced China's forecast for 2026 from 4.6% to 4.5% and its forecast for 2027 from 4.1% to 4.0%. The reasons behind this are the weakness of domestic demand in China and the pressure of expensive oil. In these predictions, India's growth appears to be faster.
IMF studies the economic condition of those countries. Growth rate means the rate at which the country's production and services are likely to increase. This does not mean that everyone's salary will increase by that much percentage.
For India, the year is from April to March, while for China, the year is from January to December. Therefore, it is important to keep this time difference in mind while making this comparison. Faster growth also does not mean a bigger economy. Even if the sales of a small shop increase by 10% and that of a big shop by 5%, the total sales of the big shop may still be more.
What changes did other organizations make?
In October 2026, the World Bank projected India's growth rate for 2026–27 at 7.1% against the June estimate of 6.6%. He has cited the country's domestic purchases and strong exports as reasons for his support. Simply put, the demand from Indian consumers and business from outside is helping the economy.
Asian Development Bank, i.e. ADB, in September 2026 increased India's 2026–27 forecast from 6.6% to 7.0%. But the estimate for the next year has been reduced from 7.3% to 7.1%. From this, one thing becomes clear: If the estimate for one year increases, it does not mean that the estimate for every subsequent year will also increase. If the current year's production is higher than expected, the percentage increase in the next year may be slightly lower.
OECD means an international organization that studies the economic policies of countries. In June, it had kept the forecast for India for 2026–27 at 6.3%, which was reduced to 7.1% in September. Estimate for 2027–28 increased from 6.4% to 6.5%. In its September report, China is projected to grow by 4.5% in 2026 and 4.2% in 2027. However, OECD has also expressed the possibility of pressure on India's purchasing power. Therefore, its report contains both a good sign and a challenge ahead.
UN DESA, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, had reduced India's forecast for January to December 2026 from 6.6% to 6.4% in May 2026. There was concern at the time about the conflict in the Middle East and difficulties in energy trade. However, he cited reasons supporting India's local purchases and export of services.
In the April 2026 survey of UN ESCAP, the United Nations organization for Asia and the Pacific, the forecast for India was 6.4% in 2026 and 6.6% in 2027. This is a separate report. UN DESA and UN ESCAP both have United Nations in their names.
Simple meaning of all these reports
Recent IMF, World Bank, ADB and OECD projections point to India's growth of around 7% for the current financial year. Factors like local demand, services, exports and investment frequently come up in their reports. Hence, it can be said that India's development is progressing with the support of many activities.
If the estimate is from 6.4% to 7.0%, then it is an increase of 0.6 percentage points. This does not mean that the economy suddenly grew by 0.6%; More growth is expected than before. Similarly, even if China's economy is estimated at 4.6% to 4.5%, its economy is predicted to grow, not decline.
Different projections for India and China do not mean that China's problems are the reason for India's growth. India's own purchases, trade and services will have to be understood separately. If we look at this in daily life and statistics of the last three years, the picture becomes more clear.
If you want to understand the development of India, there is no need to look only at big companies or the stock market. Goods reaching from villages to cities, things made in factories, people's purchases, family savings and people traveling – all this is linked to the economic condition of the country. When a person buys an item from a shop, it is not only the shopkeeper who gets the benefit. Its effect also reaches the person who makes the thing, delivers it and works on it.
Many statistics of the last three years show increasing economic activity in India. There has been an increase in sectors like export of services, sale of vehicles, steel production, medicine and local tourism. However, not all areas have progressed at the same pace. As the country progresses, it is also important to see how much the income and employment of the average family improves.
What does the country's growth rate say?
GDP means the total value of final goods produced and services provided in the country. Simply put, it is a comprehensive account of how much economic work has been done in the country. The growth rate seen after removing the effect of inflation helps in understanding the increase in production and services.
According to the revised calculations of the Statistics Ministry, this growth is 7.3% in 2023–24, 7.2% in 2024–25 and 7.8% in the preliminary estimate of 2025–26. Therefore, the country has maintained the pace of growth in these three years. But if the growth rate of the country is 7.8%, it does not mean that the income of every person has also increased by the same amount.
How are roads and markets connected to each other?
If a good road is built then it would be easier to deliver the farmer's produce to the market. Raw materials are delivered to the factory on time and finished goods reach the customer quickly. Good facilities of railways, electricity and warehouse help in business. When new work starts, labourers, drivers, artisans and small traders get an opportunity to earn income.
When people earn and buy, other people get work. This demand within the country supports India's development. Along with this, income is also generated from selling goods and services abroad.
Increase in people's savings and SIP
SIP means the method of keeping money in mutual fund at fixed periodicity. The habit of saving a small amount every month can be useful for many families in long-term planning.
According to data from mutual fund industry body AMFI, the total annual SIP investment in 2023–24 was ₹ 1,99,219 crore. It will be ₹2,89,352 crore in 2024–25 and ₹3,49,589 crore in 2025–26. There was an increase of about 45% in the first year and then about 21%.
What changed in services and clothing trade
India does not just sell things abroad. Also provides computers, information and other business services. Exports of telecom, computer and information services were US$163.6 billion in 2023–24. After that it will be 183.3 billion and in 2025–26 it will be 206.6 billion dollars. This is the export of certain types of services, not the income of the entire IT industry.
Exports of textiles and garments, including handicrafts, increased from ₹2,97,004 crore to ₹3,19,573 crore and then to ₹3,25,339 crore. So sales increased, but their pace slowed down in the last year. Increase in sales in rupees may also have an impact on the price of goods and the value of the rupee against the dollar.
Vehicle and factory statistics
Sales of passenger vehicles like cars in the country are expected to be 42.19 lakh in 2023–24, 43.02 lakh in 2024–25 and 46.43 lakh in 2025–26. Sales of two-wheelers like bikes and scooters increased from 179.74 lakh to 196.07 lakh and then to 217.06 lakh in the same years.
The sales of vehicles in the business decreased slightly from 9.69 lakh to 9.59 lakh and then to 10.80 lakh.
Steel production increased from 144.3 to 152.2 and then to 168.4 million tonnes. One million tonnes means one lakh tonnes. The index measuring cement production increased from 108.9 to 115.9 and 125.8.
Electricity Farming and Small Business
The installed capacity to generate electricity from sunlight increased from 81.81 to 105.65 and then to 150.26 GW in three years. As capacity increases, it becomes easier to generate more electricity. The goods transported by railways also increased from 1,591 to 1,617 and then to 1,670 million tonnes.
The production of grains is 332.30 to 357.73 and then 376.56 million tonnes in the respective agricultural years. These figures are rough estimates. A good harvest can support the country's food needs and rural trade.
Micro, small and medium businesses are called MSMEs. In the available two year data, the share of MSME related products in the country's merchandise exports increased from 45.74% to 48.55%. Similar figures for the third year are not available. The business of preparing and selling food items also connects farmers, packers and shopkeepers. Sufficiently comparable figures are required to show its growth over three years.
daily shopping and medicine market
The sector of soap, biscuits, toothpaste and daily need items available in packets is called FMCG. The growth rate of sales amount in the three months from October to December of 2023, 2024 and 2025 was 6.0%, 10.6% and 7.8% respectively. But the growth in quantity of goods sold was 6.4%, 7.1% and 2.6%.
Drug exports are expected to increase from US$27.85 billion in 2023–24 to US$30.47 billion in 2024–25 and US$31.11 billion in 2025–26. The country's pharmaceutical market has increased from approximately ₹2.26 lakh crore to ₹2.46 lakh crore in the last two available years. According to published reports, its growth in the last year was 8.8%. This is a good sign for the industry. It is also important that people get access to medicines and treatment.
Tourism provides employment to many people
Apart from the hotel, drivers, restaurants, guides and local shopkeepers can also benefit from tourism. Domestic tourist visits in the country are estimated to be 250.88 crore in 2023, 294.82 crore in 2024 and 428.69 crore in 2025. These are visits, not numbers of individual individuals.
The arrival of foreign tourists increased from 95.21 lakh to 99.52 lakh, but is estimated to be 91.50 lakh in 2025. That is, despite the increase in local tourism, there is a decline in foreign arrivals.
Relationship between building office and godown
When a house is constructed, carpenters, carpenters, plumbers, electricians and goods sellers get work. Even if a company needs an office and a manufacturer needs a factory or godown, many services are required. Therefore the property and construction business is linked to other sectors.
Development becomes more meaningful when benefits reach the common man
There are many grounds to talk positively about India. Various industries grow, services provide foreign income, production increases and families invest for the future. All this can help the country move forward.
But the true effect of development should be visible in ordinary life also. When youth get decent work, the burden of expenses against salaries is reduced, small businessmen earn money and education and treatment are provided, then more people get the benefits of development. Therefore, along with being optimistic about India's progress, it is equally important to keep an eye on the employment and general family situation.
