NASA Satellite Discover Ancient Impact Crater: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released a satellite image in which a mysterious structure hidden in the Australian desert is visible. The agency's Landsat 9 satellite recently passed over the Kimberley region of Western Australia and captured the image of a legged impact structure. Although this structure may look like something from another world, NASA has given it the right name – Spider Crater. This is the result of a meteorite collision and subsequent erosion over millions of years.
Possibility of collision in 90 crore years
This oval-shaped impact structure is eight by seven miles, with a spider-like center and a diameter of 2.5 miles, but scientists have discovered how Spider Crater was formed? And when was it made? It is still a mystery. It is estimated that this collision took place 600 million to 900 million years ago. After being discovered in the 1950s, this crater kept scientists confused for many years. They were not able to understand how its strange shape was formed?
Evidence was not found until the 1970s
The rugged terrain and remote location of this place makes it difficult to reach here. Its distinctive pattern can be best seen from the air or in satellite images. Vegetation is especially dense along the banks of the narrow stream that flows diagonally across the crater. Spider Crater's strange shape puzzled geologists about its origin for years, until evidence was discovered in the 1970s.
Researchers saw grooved, cone-shaped cracks in the rocks, which were clear signs of a meteorite or asteroid impact. This was further confirmed by badly folded layers of sedimentary rocks, which provided evidence of the tremendous forces generated when an object from space collided with the Earth. Some experts believed that this strange structure was formed by a volcano, but a closer look revealed signs of a much more violent past. Geologists found cracks known as 'shatter cones' scattered across the central dome of Spider Crater. These special cracks are formed only when strong shock waves break the rock, which provide definite evidence of a collision. Scientists reported in July that North Pole Dome (pictured), located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, is the oldest asteroid impact crater on Earth.
