British officer's wife had a dream

The most famous story of this temple is related to the British era. It is said that during the British rule, the wife of M. Annesley, the first administrator here, saw in her dream the idol of the goddess placed on a Peepal tree. When she woke up in the morning and reached that place with the British troops, she too saw the statue there.

This is how the name “Chauradevi” came about.

First of all, Annesley's wife started worshiping by making a platform made of lime and concrete in front of the idol placed inside the Peepal tree, due to which it was named Chauradevi. Because the word “Chaura” means platform. Since then this place became famous by the name of Chauradevi Temple.

Let us tell you that thousands of devotees reach here every day and religious rituals take place. A huge fair is held here during Navratri. There are temples of other gods and goddesses also built around the temple.

The thing to be noted here is that these stories about the appearance of the idol and dreams are based on local beliefs and folklore. Therefore, their independent historical confirmation cannot be claimed. The details of the temple are mainly taken from an old report (circa 2018) of Amar Ujala and the official website of the district. No direct description of British officers paying obeisance at this place was found in the sources obtained. In this there is only mention of puja and getting the platform built by the officer's wife. For accurate information about history, it would be better to look at the district administration or local records.
