Kolkata:
Trinamool Congress national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee appeared before Kolkata Police on Wednesday for questioning in connection with a dispute over a billboard outside a party office on Camac Street.
Banerjee arrived at Shakespeare Sarani police station around 11.30 am, a police officer said. The police had served two notices at his residence in Kalighat, asking him to appear for questioning following a complaint by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
The complaint alleged that police personnel and civic workers were harassed and assaulted while attempting to remove the TMC’s signage from a building housing the party office on Camac Street in central Kolkata.
The incident occurred on August 27 and led to protests by TMC supporters during the removal of the billboard displaying the party’s name and twin-flower symbol. Three FIRs were registered at Shakespeare Sarani police station in connection with the incident.
The fire department had also issued a separate notice relating to the matter.
TMC leaders criticised the police action against Banerjee, alleging political motivation. The investigation into the incident is continuing.
