Vishwajit More's Historic Achievement in Wrestling World Championship, First Greco-Roman Wrestler to Win a Silver Medal

  • Earned silver medal in U-23
  • Visa of 9 persons from India rejected
  • Vishwajit had a chance to win gold

Indian wrestler Vishwajit Ramachandra More won India's first silver medal in the Greco-Roman category of the Under-23 Wrestling World Championship on Thursday.

Morey, a two-time bronze medalist at the U-23 world level, lost 12-13 to Georgia's Koba Karumidze at the last minute in the men's 55kg Greco-Roman final. More is the only Greco-Roman wrestler from India to win two medals at the U-23 World Championships.

Vishwajit's historic performance

He became India's first Greco-Roman wrestler to reach the final of the Under-23 World Championship on Tuesday. He performed brilliantly in three consecutive matches. He also started his campaign by beating Mexico's Isaac Marin Mata 10-8.
In the quarter-finals, he faced Iran's Under-20 World Champion Armin Shamsipour. Shamsipour had a shoulder injury and Vishwajit used a 'four-pointer throw' to defeat him 8–1.

There was a chance to win gold

The semi-final against Russia's Malik Gigiyev was also very exciting, with both wrestlers benefiting from a 'challenge' (a chance to challenge the referee's decision). Finally Vishwajit turned the match in his favor with a margin of 6-4.

Vishwajit was excited in the final. He would have become the first Indian wrestler to win gold in the Greco-Roman event of the Under-23 World Championship. Meanwhile, he suffered a loss to a wrestler from Georgia in the finals.

Visa of 9 persons from India rejected

Meanwhile, an administrative problem had to be faced during the earlier campaign in India. 9 Indian wrestlers (Greco-Roman and women's wrestlers) did not get visas for the Under-23 World Wrestling Championship (Las Vegas) because they were under 20 years of age and had no full-time employment.

WFI President Sanjay Singh said that the US Embassy had denied visas to Indian wrestlers saying that they were all unemployed. This happened for the first time in history. So far, the president of UWW had also written to him in this regard. The visa denial is entirely the fault of the US Embassy. Due to this, India had to lose the gold medal.
At least two of the wrestlers who were denied visas were strong contenders to win gold. India suffered a huge loss of medals due to the American Embassy's mistake.
