New Delhi: Ankita's parents and some Congress leaders, who were protesting at India Gate here demanding to stop the appointment of a “VIP” allegedly linked to the Ankita Bhandari murder case to a constitutional post, were taken into custody early Thursday. Congress accused the police of misbehaving with Ankita's parents.
According to Congress leaders, the police detained Ankita's parents and other people involved in the protest around 4 am. Later everyone was released. Congress leaders Supriya Shrinate, Pawan Kheda and Qazi Nizamuddin criticized the police action and alleged that those demanding justice were being targeted. Ankita's parents were protesting against the appointment of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dushyant Gautam as the Governor of Sikkim and sat on a dharna at India Gate on Wednesday.
They allege that the alleged “VIP” whose role in the murder case is being questioned is Gautam. At the time of this murder which took place in September 2022, Gautam was the Uttarakhand in-charge of BJP. However, there was no immediate response from BJP or Gautam on these allegations. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached India Gate late on Wednesday evening and met Ankita's parents and assured support to the family in the fight for justice.
Ankita's family did not get justice even after four years
Rahul Gandhi later posted on 'X' and alleged that even after four years, Ankita's family has not got justice. Ankita's father requested President Draupadi Murmu to stop the appointment of Dushyant Gautam to the post of Governor, saying that Gautam should not be appointed as the Governor until the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation is completed. Ankita, 19, who was a receptionist at Vanantra Resort near Rishikesh, was murdered in September 2022. In this case, the resort owner Pulkit Arya and two of his employees were convicted by the court and all three were sentenced to life imprisonment.
