New Delhi, October 18. Business in the capital has been severely impacted due to ongoing protests over the past several days.
Not only large traders but also laborers and street vendors have been affected. According to Brijesh Goyal, Chairman of the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), the continuous protests in the capital in October have caused a loss of about three thousand crores to Delhi’s trade so far. Goyal mentioned that in the first protest on October 10, a loss of two thousand crores occurred, and between October 13 and 16, the blockade in Central Delhi, closure of the metro, and closure of Central Park resulted in a loss of one thousand crores.
The retail sector suffered a loss of 1800 crores, while the wholesale trade faced a damage of 600 crores. The hospitality and service sectors incurred a loss of 300 crores. Transport, auto-taxi, and tourism faced a loss of 180 crores.
The informal sector, which includes daily wage laborers, artisans, and loaders, was affected by up to four percent, resulting in a loss of 120 crores. The CTI Chairman stated that the poor have been hit the hardest by the protests. The work of loading-unloading laborers, artisans, salesmen, hawkers, street vendors, and daily wage laborers has come to a complete standstill.
More than 50,000 daily wage laborers in Gandhi Nagar and Sadar Bazaar have been left unemployed. He noted that Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali are the only months for earning throughout the year.
If protests continue every week, the losses could exceed 10,000 crores by Diwali. The main demands of the traders’ organization include: a ban on protests in Central Delhi, New Delhi, and the Lutyens zone until Diwali; the establishment of permanent protest sites in outer Delhi, Burari, Rohini, and Dwarka for the future; a relief package or concessions for the three thousand crores loss incurred in October; and that the police administration should not pressure shopkeepers to close their shops, but rather allow markets to remain open.
