An interesting thing has come to light in the new research of University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. According to this study published in the journal ‘Frontiers in Pain Research’, listening to your favorite song while getting a needle helps in reducing the pain. For this research, 204 such patients were selected, who had to get a cannula inserted in the vein before MRI. The aim of the research was to know how different types of music affect pain.
How was pain measured?
To find out how much pain the patients experienced, researchers asked them three times. The first time as soon as the needle is inserted, the second time after 30 seconds and the third time after two minutes. On comparing the responses of these three times, a clear pattern was seen.
effect of favorite song
Research results showed that listening to favorite music during procedures like needle insertion can reduce the feeling of pain. The special thing was that the patients’ own favorite songs were also included in it, which shows that the choice of song is also important. However, this does not mean that music will ease everyone’s pain. It can be seen as a way to help reduce pain, not as a substitute for treatment.
