Dera Baba Nanak, October 19, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Dr Amandeep Kaur, wife of jailed gangster Jagdeep Singh alias Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, has announced her intention to contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections from the Dera Baba Nanak constituency in Gurdaspur district.
Kaur, who recently returned from the United States, declared her candidature at a public gathering in Sarafkot village, where she addressed supporters and outlined her plans to enter politics under the banner of the 'Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Team'.
While confirming that she would contest the election, Kaur said she had not yet decided whether to seek the nomination of an established political party or enter the electoral contest as an Independent candidate.
Left Dental Studies in US to Enter Punjab Politics
Amandeep Kaur said she had discontinued her dental studies in the United States and returned to Punjab with the intention of settling permanently in Dera Baba Nanak and working for the welfare of local residents.
Presenting herself as a servicemanor public servant, she said her connection with the constituency was both personal and familial.
Describing herself as a daughter as well as a daughter-in-law of the area, she maintained that serving its residents was a responsibility she intended to fulfill through public life.
She appealed to voters to support her candidature and give her an opportunity to represent the constituency in the Punjab Legislative Assembly.
Defends Husband Against Gangster Label
During her interaction with supporters, Kaur also spoke about her husband, Jagdeep Singh, popularly known as Jaggu Bhagwanpuria.
She objected to his being identified solely by the gangster label and urged people to consider his identity beyond the criminal allegations associated with his name.
Kaur said her husband was Jagdeep Singh Athwal and maintained that no individual was born a gangster.
Bhagwanpuria, who faces several criminal cases, is currently lodged in Silchar Central Jail in Assam.
Her remarks defending her husband came as she sought to establish her own political identity in the constituency.
Ready to Face Established Political Leaders
Asked about the possibility of competing against prominent political figures, including Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Aam Aadmi Party leader Gurdeep Singh Randhawa, Kaur expressed confidence in her electoral prospects.
She maintained that political influence was not a birthright and that leaders attained prominence through the confidence and support of voters.
While expressing respect for experienced politicians, she said she believed the people of Dera Baba Nanak would give her an opportunity to serve them.
Claims Welfare Activities Underway for Six Months
Kaur said her associates had already been involved in social welfare initiatives across the constituency for approximately six months.
According to her, the activities were being undertaken under the guidance of Rajwinder Kaur and included financial and other assistance for marriages of girls from economically disadvantaged families, educational support and additional community welfare programs.
She said these initiatives would continue regardless of whether she succeeded in the Assembly election.
Rajwinder Kaur, identified as chairperson of the Dera Baba Nanak Market Committee and associated with the District Parishad, was among those present at the gathering.
Bhagwanpuria's maternal aunt and several supporters also attended the programme.
Decision on Political Party Yet to Be Taken
Amandeep Kaur said the decision to contest from Dera Baba Nanak was final, although her electoral affiliation would be determined after consultations with her supporters and Rajwinder Kaur.
She has not announced an alliance with any established political party, and no party has formally declared her as its candidate.
Her entry into the electoral arena introduces a new political contender in the Dera Baba Nanak constituency ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
