New Delhi, Read. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made changes in the senior men's selection committee and included former Indian spinner Ramesh Powar. At the same time, former left arm spinner Pragyan Ojha has been appointed as the new chief selector. According to BCCI, Ojha has been made the chairman of the selection panel on the basis of his seniority.
This change has happened after Ajit Agarkar left the post of chief selector. The new selection committee includes Pragyan Ojha, Ramesh Powar, Shiv Sundar Das, RP Singh and Ajay Ratra. Powar's name among the panel members was unanimously agreed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).
Cricket Advisory Committee recommended the name of Ramesh Powar
The process of selection of Ramesh Powar was completed by the Cricket Advisory Committee. The committee included Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape. The duo had screened and interviewed applicants at the BCCI headquarters last week. According to media reports, Powar was also interviewed for the post of junior selection committee member. However, he eventually got a place in the senior men's selection committee. For this post, he left behind former players like Wasim Jaffer, Salil Ankola, Jacob Martin and Connor Williams.
Powar has played two Tests and 31 ODIs for India.
Ramesh Powar, 48, represented the Indian team between 2004 and 2007. He has played two Tests and 31 ODI matches. Along with experience on the cricket field, he also has vast experience in coaching. Powar, a resident of Mumbai, has been the head coach of the Indian women's cricket team twice. During his tenure, the team won the Asia Cup title and won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Apart from this, he contributed as a coach in helping Mumbai win the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Also worked with Under-19 team of Gujarat and Australia
Ramesh Powar was the head coach of Gujarat's senior men's team for the last two seasons before stepping down recently. Apart from this, he also played the role of consultant coach of Australia's Under-19 team during the recent ODI series against India. His experience of working at different levels of the game can now prove useful in the functioning of the selection committee.
The post became vacant after the departure of Ajit Agarkar.
This place in the Senior Men's Selection Committee had become vacant after Ajit Agarkar stepped down from the post of Chief Selector. Agarkar took over the responsibility in July 2023. During his tenure, the Indian men's cricket team achieved many major achievements. During this period, the Indian team won three ICC trophies and two Asia Cup titles. Apart from this, the Indian team also won two consecutive gold medals in the Asian Games. Now the new selection committee will have the responsibility of selecting players for Indian cricket and carrying forward the future plans of the team.
