Amidst the ongoing violence in France, a statement by the US President has created a new controversy. He raised questions on the policy of his old friend, whereas in ground reality the reason for the protests is being said to be something else.
According to Trump, Macron did not pay attention to his advice. He said that Paris would soon become a Muslim city and this was not the deal. Trump blamed Macron’s immigration policy for the worsening situation in France. He claims that due to this policy the face of Paris is changing. He also said that France should tighten its borders and also raised questions on Europe’s immigration policies.
The real reason for the demonstration is something else
However, the recent demonstrations in France did not start over immigration, but over inflation, rising expenses and the condition of government services. This movement was initially started by students against the shortage of teachers and poor systems in schools. Later, this also added resentment among the common people regarding inflation and government services. During this period, incidents of violence and looting also took place.
Violence statistics and restrictions
Violence, arson and looting followed weekend demonstrations in Paris, Lille, Nice and several other cities. Public gatherings were banned at many places and curfew was imposed at the local level. Curfew was imposed from 11 pm to 6 am in Place de la Republique and Le All area of Paris. According to the French Interior Ministry, about 2,400 people were arrested and about 1,000 policemen were injured following the violence. Organizations related to trade and retail say that about 3,000 shops were affected.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said that instead of imposing a curfew in the whole of Paris, it is better to impose restrictions in selected areas. He did not rule out the possibility of declaring emergency if needed.
Macron’s stance
Addressing the nation on television on Sunday, President Macron condemned the violence and vandalism. He said that nothing can justify these incidents. He also talked about keeping the demands of peaceful protesters separate from the activities of those who commit violence. Macron acknowledged that it is important to understand people’s economic problems and concerns about public services. The French government is currently busy restoring security, helping affected businessmen and answering questions on public services. Trump’s statement has come from his old warning and is his own claim.
