New Delhi. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a major change in the selection committee of the men's cricket team and appointed former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha as the new chief selector. He will take over this important responsibility in place of Ajit Agarkar. Along with this, former Indian cricketer and experienced coach Ramesh Powar has also been included in the selection committee. After the new appointments, the reconstitution of the five-member selection committee of the Indian men's cricket team has been completed. Now cricket fans will keep an eye on what strategy the new committee uses to select Team India for future series and big international tournaments.
The reason for making Pragyan Ojha the chairman of the selection committee has been said to be his seniority in Test matches in his international career. Former left-arm spin bowler Ojha has played international cricket for the Indian team and earned recognition for his performances. Now he has got the important responsibility of selecting players. The job of the selection committee is not only to decide the names of the players in the team but also to prepare the right combination keeping in mind the needs of the team, performance in domestic cricket, fitness of the players and future plans. In such a situation, Ojha will be faced with the challenge of maintaining a balance between giving opportunities to talented young players and maintaining trust in the experienced players.
It is also considered important to include Ramesh Powar in the selection committee. Powar has played two Tests and 31 ODI matches for the Indian team. After retiring from cricket, he made his mark in the field of coaching. He has been the head coach of the Indian women's cricket team. Apart from this, he has also worked as a coach with the teams of Mumbai and Gujarat. He also has the experience of handling the responsibility of bowling coach in BCCI's Center of Excellence. During her tenure with the women's team, India won the Asia Cup title and won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. His experience can help the selection committee in assessing the technique and performance of the players.
Ramesh Powar's name was recommended by the Cricket Advisory Committee of BCCI. Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape were included in this committee. The two unanimously agreed on Powar's name after completing the process of screening and interviewing the applicants at the BCCI headquarters. After this, he was recommended to be included in the selection committee.
BCCI has also greatly appreciated the contribution of former Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar. Agarkar took over as chairman of the selection committee in July 2023. During his tenure, the Indian team won three ICC trophies and two Asia Cup titles. Apart from this, India won gold medals in two consecutive Asian Games. Due to these achievements, his tenure is being considered important for Indian cricket.
In the new selection committee, Pragyan Ojha will hold the responsibility as chairman while Shiv Sundar Das, RP Singh, Ajay Ratra and Ramesh Powar will be the other members. Now this new team will have the responsibility of maintaining the strength of Indian cricket and preparing a team that performs consistently at the international level.
