Karnataka government signs LoI with University of York for innovation and research

The Government of Karnataka’s Department of Electronics, IT & Biotechnology has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the University of York, United Kingdom, aiming to strengthen innovation and research collaboration. The signing took place in the presence of David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, following his meeting with Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge.

The LoI establishes a framework for cooperation in areas including innovation, research, technology, entrepreneurship, startup market access, and institutional partnerships. Specific fields of focus are bioeconomy, clean technology, agri-tech, and digital technologies. The agreement also envisages joint research projects, pilot initiatives, knowledge exchange, and stronger links between academia and industry.

Discussions further addressed opportunities in sustainability, solid waste management, water, mobility, security, and policing, alongside enhancing university and research partnerships. York and North Yorkshire bring expertise in bioeconomy, industrial biotechnology, sustainable chemistry, agricultural innovation, and clean technologies, while Karnataka offers strengths in biotechnology, digital technologies, startups, and engineering talent.

Minister Priyank Kharge stated, “Our Global Innovation Alliance gives us a ready platform to take this forward. The areas of interest on both sides are closely aligned. We will identify a few clear areas of focus and move quickly on joint innovation programs, Centers of Excellence, Government-to-Government partnerships and focused trials over the next three years, particularly around sustainability, waste management and creating economic value from waste.”

He added that the objective is to create a practical working framework, with clear institutional partners on both sides and measurable outcomes.

The partnership will concentrate on identifying a limited number of priority sectors and converting the LoI into joint pilot projects, research collaborations, startup linkages, and commercialization opportunities.
