Understand share market and IPO
Usually, when you invest money in the share market through any app or portal or broker, you are buying or selling shares of a company which is already available in the share market. In such a situation, you know how much the shares of that company are worth, how much they were worth earlier and what has been the history of the company. IPO is a completely different thing from this.

IPO means that when a company is entering the stock market for the first time, it gives an opportunity to all the investors. In this the number and amount of shares is fixed. Usually you can buy a lot by investing Rs 12 to 14 thousand. Where you can buy at least one share in the share market. Whereas, in IPO you have to buy at least one lot. Suppose the price band in IPO is kept at Rs 100 and the lot size is 120, then you will have to invest at least Rs 12000. A maximum of Rs 2 lakh can be invested in an IPO.
Now one more thing happens. Generally subscription is more in IPO. Meaning, if a company has set a target of selling 1 lakh lots, then often the number of buyers exceeds 1 lakh. In this situation, the help of lottery system is taken to allot it. For example, suppose you, your brother, sister and two more people in the house booked Jio's IPO. Now, if the number of people taking IPO exceeds the fixed target, then everyone may not get allotment. Through lottery system, shares are given to a fixed number of people and the money of the remaining people is returned.
How do portals work?
At present, if you apply for Jio's IPO, then you should have at least Rs 13428 i.e. money equal to the price of one lot in your demat account or in the account of that portal or app. If you increase the number of lots in this coefficient, you will have to invest the same amount of money. The amount of money will be locked for the number of lots you book. Suppose you have Rs 15000 in your account and you book a lot, then Rs 13428 will be locked for a few days.
In case of Jio, allotment will be done on 26th October and refund will start from the next day i.e. 27th October. That means if you book on 21st, your money will be locked for at least the next 6 days. It is important to know here that if you get the IPO, it will be visible at the time of listing i.e. 26th October whether you have profit or loss. In case of huge profits, some investors sell the shares immediately and some investors withdraw their invested money by selling some shares and leave the remaining shares.
If you do not get the IPO then your money will be released i.e. you can use the locked money again.
