India has strongly opposed the efforts in the United Nations to create a negative image of the world's largest democracy on the basis of baseless allegations and little data. India has made it clear that human rights should not be used to exert political pressure or target certain countries.
During the discussion of the Working Group on Missing Persons in the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday (October 20), India's Under-Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs Barkha Tamarkar made the country's stand clear. He said that India opposes attempts to create a negative image of the country based on baseless allegations, incomplete data or reports that do not contain specific observations about India.
India is ready to engage with the international system on human rights issues. However, Tamrakar made it clear that this conversation should be based on the principles of mutual consultation, cooperation, transparency and non-discrimination.
