Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka have been granted bail by the Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court in Delhi. Both were sent to judicial custody in a case related to the protest at Jantar Mantar and alleged violation of pre-determined bail bond conditions. During the hearing on Wednesday, the court granted bail to both of them after reserving the order.
Delhi Police had demanded from the court to extend the judicial custody of both the leaders by three days. Earlier on October 13, he was sent to judicial custody for five days. It is alleged that despite the restrictions imposed on the protest, CJP leaders and workers crossed the barricade and entered the Jantar Mantar complex, hoisted the tricolor and raised slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Ajinkya Shinde, the third leader involved in the same case, got relief after filling a new bail bond. CJP founder Abhijit Dipke questioned the action and asked whether hoisting the national flag has now become illegal. He accused the central government of suppressing the voice of protest. Shinde also claimed that the leaders were sent to jail for waving the tricolor and raising slogans of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'.
The controversy is related to the ongoing protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. CJP and opposition parties allege that names of a large number of voters have been removed during the process. The protesters are demanding accountability and resignation from the Chief Election Commissioner. On the other hand, the Election Commission has rejected the allegations of bias and said that if the name is removed wrongly, the voters can apply for re-adding the name.
Earlier on October 10, Dipke, Ranka and Das were detained. He was released the next day on condition of maintaining peace. However, Dipke claimed that he had not filled any bond that would prevent him from performing in the future. After this controversy, the party continued its protest.
