Whalefall is a movie that is one of the more disturbing offerings this spooky season. There might not be a lot of reasons to willingly return to theaters to experience the movie, but one of them is the new audio track that the movie has received.
The Josh Brolin movie can now be watched with synchronized commentary through TheaterEars’ Director’s Experience. The free feature is available in theaters across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada, as the app syncs directly to the film’s audio via the user’s smartphone. The commentary includes input from writer, director, and producer on the movie, Brian Duffield; author of the source material, Daniel Kraus; and editor on the film, Pietro Scalia.
The creators’ voices will be synced with the movie and will feed directly into the viewer’s ears as the movie plays. The conversation includes several bits about production on the movie, from how it was developed as an adaptation to how certain scenes were shot. It also includes discussions about the various practical sets that had to be made for the movie, including the sperm whale’s stomach.
How much money did Whalefall make during its opening weekend?
Despite the positive reviews that Whalefall has received, its box office collection for its opening weekend has been disappointing. It seemingly brought in about $17.5 million globally, which falls short of the projections previously made by industry analysts. It was made with a budget of $60 million, which informed the opening weekend haul that it was expected to bring in.
The movie came right in time for spooky season, and likely suffered due to the barrage of horror content that Hollywood put out throughout the month. Speculations suggest that its bad performance could be attributed to fan preference for more conventional horror movies, as opposed to the high-concept treatment of Whalefall.
Whalefall is currently in theaters. It stars Austin Abrams, Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, and John Ortiz.
