Automobile Desk – Pirelli-BKT Deal: In view of the growing demand for luxury and premium vehicles in the Indian passenger vehicle market, global tire makers are now focusing on creating manufacturing hubs within the country. In this sequence, a big strategic agreement has been signed between Italy's well-known premium tire brand Pirelli and India's Balkrishna Industries Limited (BKT). Under this agreement, BKT will manufacture tires under the Pirelli brand name at its new and modern production plant in India.
India has currently emerged as one of the fastest growing automobile markets in the world. Auto sector experts believe that car registration in the country is expected to increase at the rate of 5 to 7 percent annually from 2025 to 2030. Along with this demand, there has also been a surge in the segment of high-end and premium cars, due to which the consumption of premium car tires is expected to increase by almost five times in the coming five years. To strengthen their hold on this market share, both the giants have joined hands.
Manufacturing of 8 lakh tires by 2030
Under the first phase of the partnership, BKT will start manufacturing tires to Pirelli standards at its new advanced technology plant. According to the agreement, a maximum of 8 lakh Pirelli branded tires will be produced in this facility by the year 2030. This entire production will be carried out under Pirelli's global safety, quality and technical parameters, so that there is no compromise in the performance and premium quality of the tyres.
The path of 50-50 joint venture in future
Both the companies have planned to take this cooperation for a long time. Upon successful execution of the initial phase and fulfillment of agreed business terms, both parties will move towards forming a Joint Venture with 50-50 percent stake. Under this joint venture, there is a plan to set up a dedicated manufacturing plant where premium tires for both BKT and Pirelli brands will be produced. The tires manufactured here will not only be sold in the domestic market but will also be exported to international markets.
New business opportunities for both companies
Currently, Pirelli has its presence in India mainly through sales, distribution and marketing activities. Getting manufacturing support at the local level will directly help the company in reducing its costs and strengthening the supply chain.
BKT, on the other hand, has till now been an established name in the off-highway tire (OHT) segment primarily for the agriculture, construction and industrial sectors. Through this deal, BKT will get direct entry into the passenger vehicle (premium car) segment, which will expand the scope of its product portfolio.
The company's top leadership has described this partnership as an important milestone for India's automotive landscape. Pirelli Executive Chairman Marco Troncetti Provera and CEO Andrea Casalucchi expressed confidence in the potential of the Indian market and said that local manufacturing will make world-class premium tires easily available to Indian customers. According to BKT Chairman and Managing Director Arvind Poddar and Joint MD Rajiv Poddar, this agreement confirms BKT's advanced manufacturing capability and global quality standards.
