After suffering through a string of disappointing campaigns, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are now in dire straits and on the brink of a rebuilding phase. The five-time champions are eager to restore their former glory and reinvent their franchise ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction.
With ex-star pacer Zaheer Khan serving as a head coach, new strategic initiatives are being discussed in the CSK camp. Although the team is focused on nurturing young blood, painful decisions await several players concerning overseas slots, value-for-money, and overall impact.
CSK can raise a staggering multi-crore figure on the back of offloading five key players before the retention deadline.
1. Prashant Veer (14.20 Crore)
CSK created a huge stir at the toss-up when they went overboard with a record-breaking ₹14.20 crore uncapped bid for all-rounder Prashant Veer. While Veer's strike rate at the plate in his debut campaign was nothing short of spectacular (91 runs in 6 matches at 45.50), his bowling turned out to be a nightmare (112.50 economy).
While Veer has huge potential, the financial prudence of CSK's strategy committee will have to contemplate if spending over ₹14 crore on a prospect justifies the opportunity cost with international stars in the balance.
2. Kartik Sharma (14.20 Crore)
It would be a tough call for CSK to release young opener Kartik Sharma. This batsman enjoyed a splendid debut season with 295 runs in 11 matches at an average of 32.78. Yet, the reality is that the young opener is on the books with a prohibitive ₹14.20 crore price tag, akin to Veer.
If CSK's high command feels the top-order is fairly settled, it stands to reason that they would rather cut loose with Kartik or buy him back at a lesser price to gain huge flexibility in the purse to plug multiple bowling gaps.
3. Khaleel Ahmed(4.80 Crore)
CSK brought in left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed in the hopes that he would deliver the much-needed x-factor. Yet, the 26-year-old failed to make any significant impact in IPL 2026 with 2 wickets in 5 games. The Indian seamer is a pricey ₹4.80 crore, which means he is considered a frontline bowler by the buying franchise. With Zaheer Khan likely to turn his attention to bowling, CSK might be looking out for a better wicket-taker to lead the domestic pace attack charge.
4. Gurjapneet Singh (2.20 Crore)
Gurjapneet Singh was handed multiple runs in the team's lineup to set himself up in the XI. Yet, the left-arm pacer returned just 4 wickets in 8 matches. What's more concerning is that his economy rate was hovering around 9.28.
CSK will need seamers who can either kill the powerplay or force mistakes in the middle. With a host of local pace options, the front office can consider upgrading Gurjapneet to someone with better economics in the powerplay.

5. Nathan Ellis(2.00 Crore)
Australian death-bowler Nathan Ellis was expected to play a pivotal role in CSK's bowling attack blueprint for 2026. But a hamstring injury ruled him out before the tournament began. With overseas slots being highly coveted, CSK's high command will have to weigh Ellis' fitness before allocating an overseas spot for IPL 2027.
Ellis' injury record has not been ideal, and if there is any reason for Chennai to doubt his fitness, he could clear the decks for a fit and finish overseas quickly.

For Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2027 is about resetting and resurgence. Releasing these five players will give back over ₹37 crore into the purse of CSK at the auction. Such a big power bank for a team under the new vision of Zaheer Khan would allow them to buy back the firepower they need to re-establish their status as a champion team.
