Oil India Limited Gas Discovery: India has achieved a significant and historic breakthrough in the energy sector amidst the increasing scarcity of crude oil and natural gas globally. Oil India Limited (OIL), a leading oil and gas company owned by the Government of India, has discovered a large amount of natural gas in an offshore block in the shallow seawater of the Krishna-Godavari basin off the east coast of Andhra Pradesh. The company won the block during the official bidding process for Discovered Small Fields (DSF). The state-owned oil company disclosed information about this important discovery in an official statement on Friday.
Recorded a maximum flow of 200,000 SCMD per day
According to the company, this natural gas has been discovered in a special geological formation called ‘Matsyapuri’ in the Krishna-Godavari basin on the east coast of India, which has never been evaluated before. The maximum gas flow from this well was recorded as 200,000 standard cubic meters per day (SCMD) during initial testing. The discovery is expected to greatly increase the country’s domestic gas capacity.
Successful trial started from October 16
Oil India Limited said that this significant discovery was made in the ‘Godavari-1’ appraisal well located in the shallow water offshore block named ‘KG-DSF/GSKW/2018’. Intensive testing of the hydrocarbon-bearing zone was initiated on 16 October 2026 at a depth of 2,024 to 2,027 meters. The well is currently producing approximately 100,000 standard cubic meters of gas per day and approximately 170 barrels of condensate per day. Preparations are underway for more in-depth testing in this area.
Targeting 15 percent share of natural gas
While India currently depends on foreign imports to meet most of its natural gas needs, this new discovery will provide a major source of indigenous energy for the country. The central government’s main objective is to increase the share of natural gas in India’s total energy mix from the current 6 percent to 15 percent by 2030. Hence, rapid development of domestic resources has become the most important part of India’s national energy security strategy.
