The attention of lakhs of central employees and pensioners of the country, who are waiting for the implementation of the Eighth Pay Commission, is now on the next announcement of the Central Government. There is increasing curiosity among the employees about whether any important notification regarding eighth pay commission will be issued before Diwali, whether the path for salary increase will be cleared and whether the past arrears will be paid. In view of rising inflation, household expenses, education, health and other daily expenses, employees have high expectations of salary increase. However, no firm official announcement has been made yet whether the salary increase will be announced before Diwali or the arrears will be credited to the account.
The Central Government constituted the Eighth Central Pay Commission on November 3, 2025. Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has been made the chairperson of this commission. The commission has been given 18 months from its formation to submit its recommendations, and accordingly, the deadline to submit its report is May 2027. The recommendations of the commission are expected to consider changes in the basic salary, dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other benefits of central employees. Apart from this, the issue of revising the pension of pensioners will also be important. The picture of the actual salary increase will become clear only after the recommendations of the commission and the final decision of the government on it.
The most discussed issue regarding the eighth pay commission is the fitment factor used to decide the salary. The calculation of the revised basic salary of the employees will depend on how much this factor is determined. However, no final decision has been taken yet regarding what will be the fitment factor, how much the minimum wage will increase and how much financial benefit employees of different pay categories will get. Although different figures of salary increase are being discussed on social media and in different news media, it would be wrong to assume that they have received official approval. How much increase the employees will actually get will become clear only after the recommendations of the commission and the decision of the central government.
The issue of arrears is also a matter of special concern for the employees. If it is decided to implement the recommendations of the Eighth Pay Commission with retrospective effect from January 1, 2026, there is a possibility that eligible employees will get arrears of that time. However, the effective date of implementation, calculation of arrears, distribution of payment and when the changed salary will actually be received will all depend on the final decision of the Central Government. Therefore, even if the notification is issued before Diwali, it cannot be said with certainty that the salary increase or arrears will be credited to the account immediately. At present, central employees and pensioners are waiting for the further process of the Eighth Pay Commission and the official announcement of the Central Government.
