Thrill of SUV segment in India: Tata Punch won, Nexon and Franks also gained momentum

Automobile Desk: The craze for SUVs in the Indian market is at its peak. New vehicles are running on the roads every month and vehicle manufacturing companies are constantly updating their portfolio keeping in mind the preferences of the customers. Now the sales figures for the first half of the financial year 2027 i.e. from April to September 2026 have come out, which are telling the progress of the auto sector and the market trends. These latest figures have made it clear which vehicles Indian customers trust the most.

The dominance of Tata Motors is clearly visible in this year's sales list. Tata Punch, considered to be the company's smallest and affordable SUV, has taken the title of the country's number-1 SUV, leaving behind all the big vehicles in terms of sales.

Amazing performance of Tata Punch

If we look at the data between April to September 2026, Tata Punch has registered a strong sales of 1,23,287 units. In the same period last year, this figure was 73,455 units. If seen from this perspective, a huge increase of about 67.84 percent has been recorded in the sales of Punch on annual basis. Low price, strong SUV-like road presence and easy driving on narrow city roads are making this vehicle very popular among the common buyers.

Nexon and Franks also showed their strength

In this race, Tata's other popular vehicle Nexon was also not far behind. Nexon has secured the second position with sales of 1,11,919 units in this half year. During the same period last year, 89,574 units were sold, due to which there has been a jump of about 24.97 percent in its sales. Having two Tata vehicles occupying the top two positions is a big achievement for the company.

At the same time, Maruti Suzuki's stylish crossover-SUV Fronx has confirmed its place at the third position. Franks recorded sales of 1,10,135 units during this period, which is 43.40 percent more than last year. This vehicle has been successful in attracting those people who want both the feel of an SUV and the convenience of a hatchback.

Strong grip of Mahindra Scorpio and condition of Creta

At fourth position is the Mahindra Scorpio range, which includes both Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic. This powerful SUV has recorded total sales of 93,488 units, which is an increase of 10.46 percent compared to last year. Its rugged look and style is still appealing to the buyers.

After this, Hyundai Creta stood at fifth position with sales of 89,727 units. However, unlike other top models, there has been a slight decline of about 9.68 percent in the sales of Creta this time, as 99,345 units were sold in the same period last year.

What was the reason for Brezza lagging behind?

The biggest upset in this entire list has been seen with Maruti Suzuki Brezza, which this time has slipped out of the top-5 list i.e. at the sixth position. According to experts, the main reason behind this decline has been the arrival of its new updated model in the month of June. There was a slight impact on wholesale figures due to model changes and the transition phase of production, due to which its sales were slightly affected during this period. Overall, this scenario of the Indian SUV market makes it clear that the competition is going to get even more interesting in the coming months.
