The demonstration of students in Delhi-based Jamia Millia Islamia demanding the formation of a student union continued for the 14th day. Students are protesting inside the campus, while police force has been deployed outside the campus for security reasons. The protesting students have demanded reinstatement of the student union, ending the suspension of suspended students and action against those responsible for the use of force during the protest.
Speaking to IANS amid the ongoing protest at Jamia Millia Islamia, student Anish Khan said that initially their main demand was the restoration of the student union, but now the issues related to the movement have increased to three. He said that the first demand is to restore the student union.
The second demand is regarding the action taken against the protesting students on October 17. They allege that during that time the students were treated harshly and many students faced actions like suspension, show cause notices and campus ban.
He demanded withdrawal of all these orders. Anish Khan said that the third demand is to take action against those who are accused of misbehaving with the students during the protest. They also demanded the resignation of the university proctor.
Farhan Israel said, “Jamia Millia Islamia Student Union should be reinstated. Along with this, the University Proctor and Chief Security Advisor should resign. Apart from this, the action taken against the students should be ended.”
On writing controversial slogans on the walls, Farhan Israel said, “It has not been confirmed yet that any slogan has been written. Even if they have been written, they must have been written by people from RSS and ABVP. Such actions are being taken to divert us from our issues. We will not back down until our demands are met. The university administration is trying to forcibly end our movement, hence the force has been deployed.”
Meanwhile, amid the protests, the university has decided to conduct classes for all courses online. This system has caused problems to many students. The students who reached the university said that they were facing problems due to the protest.
