Advice to stop harvesting of paddy and other crops

Agricultural scientists of Indira Gandhi Agricultural University have advised farmers to postpone harvesting work for the next two to four days in the fields where paddy, pulses and oilseed crops are in the ripening stage.

Farmers who have started harvesting should take the harvested crops to safe places as soon as possible. Also ensure arrangements to drain excess water from the fields, so that crops are not damaged due to waterlogging.

If symptoms of diseases or pests are seen in crops, it is advised to spray necessary pesticides or fungicides only after the weather clears. Farmers sowing Rabi crops have been suggested to start sowing from the first week of November, keeping in view the weather conditions.

Emphasis on safety of vegetables, fruits and livestock

In view of the possibility of strong wind, vegetable and fruit growers have been asked to take special precautions. Along with supporting vine vegetables like bitter gourd and bottle gourd, it has also been advised to support banana plants and fruit trees as per need. It has been asked to make proper drainage arrangements in vegetable fields and not to spray pesticides during rains.

Animal owners have been advised to keep their animals in safe and dry places. Emphasis has also been laid on avoiding tying animals under trees or in open places during strong winds and rains, making adequate arrangements for dry fodder and clean drinking water.

Appeal to keep an eye on weather forecast

Indira Gandhi Agricultural University has appealed to the farmers to keep a constant eye on the weather forecast and follow the advice of agricultural scientists. Taking timely precautions can help reduce damage to crops, horticultural production and livestock due to possible heavy rains and strong winds.
