China’s second-largest EV maker eyes return to Singapore

Geely is working to appoint an agent in Singapore. It has held talks with major automotive distribution and retail groups in the country, according to The Business Times.

People familiar with the matter said Geely has set aggressive sales targets that would rival those of market leader BYD, along with high capital expenditure expectations for facilities such as showrooms and service centers.

Geely entered Singapore in 2006, with Peter Kwee’s Group Exklusiv as its agent. Like other Chinese brands at the time, it sold relatively few cars and quietly withdrew after a few years as higher Certificate of Entitlement prices curbed demand for budget cars.

Land Transport Authority data show that Geely registrations peaked at 505 cars in 2007 before falling to 26 in 2010. The brand has not registered any cars through an authorized dealer since then.

Several Chinese car brands have entered the Singapore market in recent years, as electric-vehicle rebates and the value offered by Chinese models have helped boost their popularity.

Most major brands from China’s largest automakers are already in Singapore, including brands from the wider Geely group, but Geely Auto itself is not.

Geely Auto makes a range of vehicles, including electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, conventional petrol-electric hybrids and gasoline-powered cars.

In September, BYD posted the largest auto sales in China at over 456,700 units, followed by Geely with 188,800, according to automotive news outlet CnEVPost.

Like other Chinese automakers, Geely is pursuing an aggressive global expansion to increase exports as domestic sales weaken. The company entered seven European markets this year and plans to expand into Canada in 2027, according to Reuters.
