DA Hike: Lakhs of central government employees and pensioners are waiting for an increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR). During the festive season, the eyes of the employees are fixed on the next decision of the government. There is talk that the increase in dearness allowance, which will be implemented from July 2026, may be announced around Diwali. However, this has not been officially confirmed by the government yet.
If the increase in dearness allowance is approved, then the monthly salary of central employees will increase. At the same time, pensioners can also benefit from increase in dearness relief. In such a situation, let us understand how much impact the possible increase in DA will have on the employees’ pockets and how much additional amount can be received if four months of arrears are received.
Dearness allowance changes twice a year
The Central Government usually revises the dearness allowance of employees and dearness relief of pensioners twice a year. These changes are effective from January and July. Its objective is to help employees and pensioners in reducing the impact of inflation.
Dearness allowance is calculated on the basis of the basic salary of the employees. At the same time, the dearness relief given to pensioners is determined on the basis of their respective pension amount. The actual benefit of increase in DA and DR depends on the basic salary and pension amount of the employee.
DA may increase from 60% to 63%?
Regarding the amendment of July 2026, some media reports are estimating a possible increase of 3 percent in dearness allowance. If the government approves this proposal, the current rate of 60 percent may increase to 63 percent.
However, this figure should not be considered final yet. The actual increase will be decided only after the official announcement by the government.
How much benefit will those with basic salary of ₹ 18,000 get?
If the basic salary of a central employee is Rs 18,000 per month and dearness allowance increases from 60 percent to 63 percent, then the change in his salary can be understood from this example.
- Current Basic Salary: Rs 18,000 per month
- Allowance as per 60% DA: Rs 10,800
- Allowance as per 63% DA: Rs 11,340
- Extra amount every month: Rs 540
According to this calculation, the employee can get additional dearness allowance of Rs 540 every month. However, this is only an example based on a potential 3 percent increase. Actual salary may vary due to other applicable allowances or deductions.
Can I get arrears of four months also? (DA Hike)
If the increase in dearness allowance becomes effective from July 2026, but is announced later, then employees may be likely to get arrears of previous months.
A possible increase of 3 percent on the basic salary of Rs 18,000 works out to an additional Rs 540 every month. In this way, the arrears for four months from July to October can be Rs 2,160.
This amount is given as an example only. When and for what period the arrears will be paid will depend on the final decision of the government.
Will it be announced before Diwali or will we have to wait?
With Diwali approaching, central employees are waiting for the announcement of increase in dearness allowance. However, at present no definite official date of announcement has been revealed.
Therefore, it would not be correct to claim that the government will definitely announce DA Hike before Diwali. Employees are advised to wait for the official announcement of the Central Government for information related to Dearness Allowance.
