Sonos has launched an innovative feature that lets users easily reposition speakers for home theater setups while maintaining sound quality.
Sonos has unveiled a new functionality that enhances its home theater systems, allowing portable speakers to serve as rear surround speakers without a permanent commitment. This feature is part of the company’s latest Sonos27 operating system and was tested with the newly released Beam Ultra soundbar.
The updated system enables users to move their Sonos Play speakers between rooms without disrupting their audio experience. According to the company, when the speakers are picked up, an internal accelerometer detects the movement, and advanced positioning technology automatically disconnects them from the home theater system.
The versatility of this setup marks a significant shift in user experience, as it allows the speakers to function independently after being relocated. The ability to easily reassign the speakers for various uses can fundamentally change how people utilize their Sonos systems.
Initial tests revealed mixed results. While the intention was for the speakers to seamlessly switch from surround sound to standalone mode, there were times when manual intervention through the Sonos app was necessary. However, with repeated attempts, the connection process improved, confirming the effectiveness of the new technology.
In testing the audio quality, the Beam Ultra soundbar alone delivered impressive sound, with substantial bass and an expansive soundstage. Adding the Play speakers as surrounds significantly enhanced the audio experience, creating a more immersive environment during movie scenes.
The combination of the Beam Ultra and the Play speakers proved effective, especially in smaller spaces, where the discreet design did not compromise sound quality. As a result, users can now enjoy a fuller home theater experience without unnecessary clutter.
Key Features of the New System
- Speakers automatically disconnect when moved.
- Seamless reconnection to home theater system upon return.
- Enhanced audio performance with added surround speakers.
- Compact design suitable for smaller spaces.
The combination of portability and advanced audio technology places Sonos at the forefront of home audio solutions, providing users with flexibility and enhanced sound quality.
