Supreme Court is strict on Delhi SIR, said- Changes cannot be made in Form 6, 7, 8, what will happen to 43 lakh voters?

The Supreme Court has strongly raised questions on the special intensive revision of voter list in Delhi. The Supreme Court, while hearing the special intensive verification of voters in Delhi, told the Election Commission that it cannot make changes in Forms 6, 7 and 8. The Election Commission said that it will extend the date of accepting applications for adding names to the voter list.

The court has clearly indicated that there is a need to re-think about the existing process adopted for lakhs of voters.

The Supreme Court has questioned the Election Commission on asking people who were already voters in Delhi SIR to fill Form-6. The court asked why about 43 lakh voters, whose names are registered in the 'shifted or absent' category outside the draft voter list, are being asked to fill Form-6 to get their names added again.

Two election commissioners had objected to the changes in Form 6 of SIR. On this basis a petition was filed in the Supreme Court. The hearing took place in the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana. The bench said that Forms 6, 7 and 8 are fixed formats and the Election Commission cannot make changes in them. The bench also asked why the deadline was being set so early (October 30) when there were no elections in the national capital in the near future.

A bench of 3 judges headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant has said that the next hearing on the case will be held after 2 weeks. During the hearing, the court asked why about 43 lakh people who were removed from the draft voter list are being asked to fill Form 6 to get their names re-added? Whereas Form 6 is for new voters.
