Vietnam coffee king’s eldest son becomes deputy CEO of mother’s company

The eldest son of Dang Le Nguyen Vu, chairman of coffee giant Trung Nguyen Group, has taken over as deputy CEO at his mother’s company, TNI Group.

Dang Le Trung Nguyen’s new position is “a milestone in his growth journey and a continuation of the family business,” his mother Le Hoang Diep Thao, founder of TNI Group, which also produces coffee, said in a recent Facebook post.

Nguyen, 28, is the eldest son of Vu and Thao, who divorced in 2019. They had two sons and two daughters together.

Nguyen rarely appears in public. In late 2021, he and his younger brother, Dang Le Binh Nguyen, attended a ceremony to honor Vietnamese robusta coffee with a world record.

Vu, dubbed Vietnam’s “coffee king,” founded Trung Nguyen Group in 1996 and together with Thao transformed it into one of the biggest coffee producers in Vietnam.

Following their divorce, a court ruling in 2020 awarded Vu the majority stake and control over Trung Nguyen Group and gave Thao VND1.32 trillion in cash and assets. This meant Thao was no longer involved in Trung Nguyen Group.

She continued to lead her company TNI Corporation, which was previously Trung Nguyen International established in 2008 in Singapore to handle Trung Nguyen Group’s exports.
