Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman has shared her advice for maintaining a long-lasting marriage, saying kindness, calm communication and choosing the right moment to discuss disagreements have helped her relationship with husband Ed Sinclair.
The actress, who married producer and writer Sinclair in August 2001, offered the advice while discussing her upcoming film Wicker with social media couple Benedict and Hannah Townsend. The couple, who have been married for four years, asked Colman, 52, how they could build a marriage lasting 25 years like hers.
“Be kind to each other,” Colman said, recalling advice she had heard from someone who had been married for around 50 years: “Sometimes it's the things you don't say.”
She described the observation as wise but stressed that couples should decide what works for them and find an appropriate moment to raise sensitive issues.
The The Crown star said neither she nor Sinclair was naturally inclined toward conflict, adding that they had learned to address problems through calm conversations rather than arguments in the heat of the moment.
“We've learned over the years to definitely try and talk about, you know, 'That thing on Tuesday, can we talk about that?' in a calm way and then it works well,” she said.
Colman explained that disagreements sometimes arise because one partner may have been hurt by something the other did not even notice. In such situations, she said, talking the matter through gently can help resolve the issue.
“For some people, it works in the heat of the moment; it doesn't work for me,” she added.
Colman and Sinclair first met at Cambridge University in the 1990s while working on a production of Alan Ayckbourn's table manners through the Cambridge Footlights, a student comedy society.
The actress's comments on marriage come months after she spoke about her personal understanding of gender identity, saying she had sometimes felt non-binary and had described herself to her husband as a “gay man”.
