India’s Long-Awaited Census 2027 Set to Begin: Population Count Starts January 25

After a 16-year gap, India is finally gearing up for its next full population census. The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India has notified that house-to-house population enumeration will take place from January 25 to February 28, 2027, with March 1, 2027, fixed as the official reference date.

Citizens will get a chance to participate digitally first. A self-enumeration window will open from January 10 to January 24, 2027, allowing households to submit their details online before enumerators begin door-to-door visits. A short revisional round will follow from March 1 to March 5 to catch any omissions or correct errors.

The schedule covers most of the country. However, it will not apply to Manipur (until further orders), Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, the Union Territory of Ladakh, and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. These exclusions stem from upcoming assembly elections in several states and practical difficulties in high-altitude, snow-covered regions. Separate timelines have already been notified for the poll-bound states and snow-bound areas.

This census marks a major upgrade from previous exercises. Officials are rolling out digital data collection tools, a self-enumeration portal, geo-referenced maps, and greater use of technology to speed up the process and improve accuracy. The exercise will capture not only population numbers but also detailed socio-economic, demographic, and housing data that governments rely on for policy-making, welfare schemes, and resource allocation.

India’s last complete census was held in 2011. The 2021 round was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making the 2027 count the most significant demographic snapshot in a generation. Provisional population totals are expected in the months following the field work.
