Warriors Turn Early Rout Into Convincing Victory
Stephen Curry led a dramatic Golden State comeback Friday night, finishing with 31 points as the Warriors defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 112-95 in an NBA Cup game.
Golden State erased an early 25-point deficit before pulling away, reversing the outcome of the teams’ season opener, which Los Angeles won comfortably last week.
Curry added six assists and four rebounds. Luka Doncic led the Lakers with 37 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Doncic Powers Lakers’ Dominant Opening Quarter
Doncic scored 21 points in the first quarter, making seven of 12 shots, including five 3-pointers.
He also contributed five assists and two steals during the period as Los Angeles built a 38-15 advantage.
Golden State committed 10 turnovers in the opening quarter, helping the Lakers establish their commanding lead.
Los Angeles ultimately scored 25 points from the Warriors’ 17 turnovers.
Golden State Answers With Historic Second Quarter
The Warriors responded by outscoring the Lakers 38-15 in the second quarter, bringing the teams level at halftime.
Golden State became the first team in the shot clock era, including playoff games, to trail by at least 23 points after the opening quarter and reach halftime tied or ahead.
The eventual 17-point victory also established the largest winning margin in that era for a team that trailed by at least 20 points after one quarter.
The previous record belonged to the Warriors, who overcame a 41-18 first-quarter deficit against Chicago on March 4, 1976, to win 124-110—a 14-point margin.
Curry Climbs NBA Career Scoring Rankings
Curry passed Dominique Wilkins, who scored 26,668 career points, for 18th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list during the fourth quarter.
Earlier, he and Doncic exchanged 3-pointers midway through the third.
Curry connected over Doncic with 6:22 remaining in the period before the Lakers guard answered from deep at the other end.
Doncic received a technical foul with 21.8 seconds left in the third as fans chanted and booed. Lakers teammate Matisse Thybulle was assessed a technical in the fourth.
Podziemski and Reserves Support Comeback
Brandin Podziemski supplied 21 points, six assists and five rebounds for Golden State.
The Warriors also received significant scoring from their bench, with De’Anthony Melton contributing 16 points and Georges Niang adding 11.
Both teams return to action Sunday night. Los Angeles hosts the Toronto Raptors, while Golden State welcomes the Los Angeles Clippers.
