Chennai: Rajinikanth‘s Jailer 2 is closing in on the Rs 800 crore mark at the worldwide box office, continuing its strong theatrical run in its third week. The action thriller, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, has collected Rs 776.95 crore globally after 16 days in theatres, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
The film has maintained a significant presence across Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada markets, although its daily collections have gradually declined during the third week. After earning Rs 5.9 crore on its third Thursday, the film collected Rs 5.50 crore on Friday.
With its worldwide gross nearing Rs 800 crore, Jailer 2 has added another major commercial milestone to Rajinikanth’s film career. Its performance has also placed it among the biggest Tamil cinema releases in terms of theatrical collections.
Jailer 2 worldwide collection reaches Rs 776.95 crore
According to Sacnilk, Jailer 2 has earned a worldwide gross collection of Rs 776.95 crore in 16 days. Its domestic performance accounts for a substantial portion of the total, with the film collecting Rs 509.45 crore in gross earnings across India.
The film’s domestic net collection stands at Rs 435.40 crore. The difference between gross and net collections reflects the taxes included in the gross figure.
The film crossed the Rs 500 crore mark in India’s gross box office within 15 days of its theatrical release. This achievement makes it only the second Tamil film to reach the milestone.
S Shankar’s science-fiction action film 2.0, which also featured Rajinikanth in the lead role, was the first Tamil film to cross Rs 500 crore in worldwide gross collections, according to the figures cited in the report.
The latest numbers indicate that Jailer 2 is approaching another significant milestone. However, its pace of daily earnings has slowed compared with its opening period, as is often seen when a film moves into the later weeks of its theatrical run.
Day 16 collections across different languages
The film’s performance on Day 16 was spread across four major language versions. The Tamil version remained its biggest contributor, followed by Hindi, Telugu and Kannada.
According to Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 5.50 crore on Friday across all versions. The Tamil release contributed Rs 3.75 crore from 3,796 shows, accounting for the largest share of the day’s earnings.
The Hindi version collected Rs 1 crore from 3,310 shows. The Telugu version added Rs 55 lakh from 799 shows, while the Kannada version earned Rs 20 lakh from 174 shows.
The figures show that the Tamil market continues to be the film’s strongest theatrical base. However, its Hindi version has also contributed to the overall collection, with more than 3,000 shows reported on Day 16.
The Telugu and Kannada versions recorded smaller collections in comparison, but continued to add to the film’s total earnings.
Theatre occupancy remains strongest in Tamil and Kannada
The film’s overall theatre occupancy on Day 16 varied across language versions. The Tamil version recorded an occupancy of 21.2%, while the Hindi version registered 10%.
The Telugu version reported an occupancy of 19.1%. The Kannada version recorded the highest occupancy among the four language versions at 23%.
Within the Tamil market, Chennai emerged as the leading city in terms of theatre occupancy. The film recorded 31% occupancy in the city, with screenings across 615 shows.
The occupancy figures offer an indication of audience attendance across the different language markets. While the Tamil version continued to attract a larger audience base, the Kannada version also recorded a relatively strong occupancy percentage.
The difference in occupancy across languages reflects the varying audience response and show distribution. However, occupancy figures alone do not determine a film’s total earnings, as ticket prices and the number of screenings also influence box office collections.
Jailer 2 ticket sales approach three crore
Apart from its box office earnings, Jailer 2 has also recorded substantial ticket sales. Sacnilk estimates that the film sold 4,29,196 tickets on Day 16 across its different language versions.
Its cumulative ticket sales since release have now come close to the three-crore mark.
The ticket sales indicate that the film has continued to draw audiences even as its daily collections have declined during the third week. Its wide release across multiple languages has helped it maintain a presence in theatres in different regions.
The film was screened across 8,079 shows on Day 16. The Tamil version accounted for 3,796 shows, while the Hindi version had 3,310 screenings. The Telugu and Kannada versions were shown across 799 and 174 shows, respectively.
The wide distribution has enabled the film to remain accessible to audiences across several markets. Its continued theatrical run will be important as it attempts to cross the Rs 800 crore worldwide gross milestone.
Rajinikanth returns in Nelson Dilipkumar’s sequel
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 is the sequel to the filmmaker’s 2023 blockbuster Jailer. The original film was a major commercial success and featured Rajinikanth in the lead role as a former jailer.
Backed by Sun Pictures, the sequel brings Rajinikanth back in the central role, with a large ensemble cast supporting him. SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Ramya Krishnan and Vidya Balan feature in key roles.
The film also includes special appearances by several prominent actors, including Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar, Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan. Their presence has added to the interest surrounding the sequel.
The combination of Rajinikanth’s star appeal, Nelson’s direction and the ensemble cast has been a major part of the film’s theatrical campaign. The sequel’s box office performance has also kept it in focus among recent Tamil releases.
Jailer 2 eyes the Rs 800 crore milestone
With a worldwide gross of Rs 776.95 crore after 16 days, Jailer 2 needs another Rs 23.05 crore to cross the Rs 800 crore mark. Its third-week collections have slowed, but the film continues to earn across its different language versions.
The next phase of its theatrical run will determine how quickly it reaches the milestone. For now, the film has already crossed Rs 500 crore in India’s gross market and recorded ticket sales approaching three crore.
