'Fire 12 people by Friday', Chennai IT manager heartbroken after seeing names in Excel sheet

New Delhi: A Reddit post by an IT manager from Chennai has brought out the emotional side of the layoffs. According to the post, senior officials of the company gave him a list of 12 employees and instructed him to fire everyone by Friday. About 15 minutes were allotted for talking to each employee.

According to the manager, these employees were not just team members for him. He was working with him since 2016. Due to problems in production, the team stayed in the office several times till 3 am. Eating together, drinking tea and attending each other’s weddings were a part of their life. The employees called him ‘Anna’ i.e. elder brother. He also knew their families. These people also worked on weekends and holidays as per the need of the company. Now it was the manager who had to inform him about the termination of his job.

Home loan on someone, illness in someone’s house

In the post, the manager mentioned the personal problems of the employees. A senior developer had taken a huge home loan four months ago. Another employee’s mother was undergoing treatment for cancer and the family was dependent on the company’s health insurance. At the same time, the wife of an employee was going to give birth to a child next month. The manager asked how he would tell these people on Friday that their office access has been closed and that they should pack their things and go home.

Decisions of senior officers, the manager has to face

The manager said that the decision about layoffs is taken by senior officers, but the responsibility of informing the employees and dealing with their reaction rests with the managers. He even thought about quitting his job, but his wife explained that someone else would do the work in his place and the family’s income would also be affected.

Government and private job debate on Reddit

After the post, discussion on job security started among users. Some said a government job was a safer option, while others said there was a risk of losing a job in the private sector with better pay and opportunities. One user said that accountability is necessary even in a government job and action should be taken against those who do not work as per the rules.

This post has raised questions on the human aspect of layoffs. Downsizing may be a business decision for a company, but it impacts both those who lose their jobs and the manager who breaks the news to them. The identity of the company and manager has not been mentioned in the post. The claims have also not been independently verified.
