State Flag, Mandatory Tamil: Vijay's Minister Sparks Controversy With Fresh Remark
— NDTV (@ndtv) November 2, 2026
According to media reports, Tamil Nadu Minister Aadhav Arjun said that many states in the country have their own flags, but Tamil Nadu does not have any flag. He said that a state flag would be brought for Tamil Nadu. Aadhav Arjun has also given a statement on the two language policy. Tamil Nadu Minister said that we have to give priority to our mother tongue Tamil since our school days. He said that English is only the language of business. Aadhav Arjun said that people in China, Japan and France speak in their own language. He said that Tamil should not be a language which is an option to choose. It must be necessary.
Thiru @AadhavArjuna Arjun,
Our language did not wait for your flag.
Our civilization does not need your certificate.
And our Tamil identity does not become any smaller beneath the Indian Tricolour.
This rhetoric risks nurturing a separatist mindset, teaching people to see their Tamil and Indian identities as competing loyalties. Why manufacture a divide where we should take pride in both?
And if your concern is truly Tamil, show some consistency.
You insist on Tamil in temples. Will you demand the same in churches and mosques?
Or does your enthusiasm for compulsory Tamil stop at the temple gates?
Are you interested in Tamil? Politics exercising power only in Hindu temples?
Apply your principle equally. Then lecture us about a Tamil flag.
Tell us your plans for Tamil-medium students, jobs for our youth, Tamil research and opportunities for our entrepreneurs.
Give us targets.
Give us deadlines.
Designing a flag is easy.
Delivering a future takes work.
Uplift the lives of Tamil people. Don't do politics using their identity.
தமிழ்மா இருத்தமம் ிரியமா இருத்துமம் முரம் விரிர்போட்டல். Our pride!

Tamil Nadu BJP leader Vinoj P. Selvam said on Aadhav Arjun's statement that such things fuel separatist thinking. Selvam alleged that the minister's statement instigates people to see their Tamil identity and Indian identity as opposed to each other. He said that when we should be proud of both, then why division is being created in the society. BJP leader Selvam said that our language is not waiting for your flag. Nor does our civilization need your certificate. He said that Tamil identity will never be diminished under the Indian tricolor. Selvam also said that if there is really so much concern about Tamil, then bring uniformity in your words. You insist on use of Tamil only in temples.
