The suspense and drama over Hardik Pandya and his potential IPL future may finally be over. The 33-year-old was linked to different franchises after he expressed his desire to part ways with Mumbai Indians after the horrendous IPL 2026 campaign. The all-rounder had a miserable season not just as a player but even as a captain, with his side finishing ninth.
According to reports, MI and Punjab Kings are locked in talks for a player swap that will see Hardik head to PBKS, while Arshdeep Singh will move the other way. Five-time winners are also keen on including Vishnu Vinod in the deal before the IPL’s retention and release deadline later this month.
Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Rajasthan Royals were seen as the likely destinations for Hardik ahead of the new campaign. One of the key aspects has been MI’s stance on taking away key players from each of the aforementioned sides, which didn’t come to fruition.
Punjab Kings likely to face massive loss with th deal
There is no doubt that the Baroda-born star will be a huge signing for the two-time IPL finalists. But his numbers in the last three seasons of the league are something that may cause concern.
Pandya has played 39 games since he moved back to Wankhede Stadium ahead of the 2024 season. He bowled his entire quota of four overs on just ten occasions, out of which five came in the 2024 season. Another key aspect is the economy rate.
The seamer conceded 10.75 runs per over in the 2024 season, followed by 9.77 in 2025, and 11.43 during the 2026 season. The outgoing Mumbai Indians captain picked up 25 wickets in two seasons and snared just four in the last season.
His batting form is also not good, and the player has scored just 646 runs in 39 games without any fifty.
The captaincy conundrum
It is an open secret that the Indian star would wish to lead the side to whichever franchise he joins. The only plausible option was KKR, who were keen on a big-name leader after Ajinkya Rahane’s sudden retirement.
This is where one has to ask. Have Punjab Kings made up its mind to go in a different direction? Will Shreyas Iyer even remain the captain after Hardik’s potential arrival? Last season, the Kings started well, winning six successive games and were on course to reach the playoffs. The next seven games saw the team lose six matches before beating Lucknow in their final league game, but that wasn’t enough.
The entire captaincy saga could play out before the franchise even hits the auction table once the trade is complete.
Mumbai to gain
MI’s new head coach Kieron Pollard will be rubbing his hands with glee if Arshdeep Singh does don the franchise’s jersey in the upcoming season. The side could finally have an Indian pacer at the helm who could potentially serve the team for the next decade.
The 27-year-old is India’s leading wicket-taker in the T20I format and reached the 150-wicket mark during the recent New Zealand series. He bowls well with the new ball and is also a very good death-overs seamer. In 96 games, Singh has picked up 111 wickets with a best of 5/32 and has an economy rate of 9.19 runs per over.
TheAmbani-owned side is potentially losing a star player who can be world-class on his day. One of the biggest concerns for Hardik is his fitness, with several injuries in the last six months. On the other hand, they stand to get a player who is in the prime of his career and could play the leading role with a side that knows how to win IPL titles and can elevate players to the next level.
