Indian American Politicians: Leaders of Indian origin have registered their strong presence in America’s mid-term elections. In the election results, leaders coming from the Indian-American community have achieved great success. These include the names of Piya Dandiya, Suhas Subramaniam and Aruna Miller. Some made it to the US House of Representatives and some won back their posts. These results have once again brought into focus the increasing participation of people of Indian origin in American politics. But why are these elections being considered a big test for President Donald Trump?
Democratic Party candidate from Florida Pia Dandiya has won the election for the US House of Representatives, defeating Republican Party candidate and former Marine soldier Casey Askar. According to the election results, Pia got 51.9 percent votes, while her rival got 49.1 percent votes. Piya’s parents had migrated to America from India. A former high school principal, she also founded a school aimed at providing better education and economic opportunities to students from low-income families.
Suhas Subramaniam won for the second time
Indian-origin Democratic leader Suhas Subramaniam has also won from Virginia’s 10th Congressional District. Suhas, 40, got more than 61.5 percent votes, while his Republican rival Dave Beckwith got 36.4 percent votes. Suhas, who was an advisor to Barack Obama, has been re-elected to the US House of Representatives. His parents are of Indian origin. Earlier, he also helped organize volunteers to rebuild communities affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Aruna Miller also dominates American politics
Aruna Miller of Indian origin has also maintained her strong political hold in Maryland. She was in the electoral fray with Democratic Party candidate Wes Moore. Wes Moore again won the post of governor by defeating Republican candidate Dan Cox. With this, Aruna Miller’s second term as Lieutenant Governor was also confirmed. He was born in Hyderabad, India. Before the elections, he had appealed to the migrant communities to vote and hold the Trump administration accountable.
Why are midterm elections important for Donald Trump?
Let us tell you that mid-term elections in America are held in the middle of the four-year term of the President. In these elections, voting takes place on all 435 seats of the US House of Representatives and 35 seats of the Senate. Their results decide which party will have majority in both the houses of Parliament.
If the Republican Party loses its majority, it may be difficult for President Donald Trump to implement his policies and decisions. The opposition will get more opportunity to question the functioning of the government and scrutinize its policies. This is the reason why these elections are considered a major test of Trump’s political influence and the functioning of his administration.
