The left-handed Montgomery defeated Belgium’s Jeline Vandromme 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in a second-round contest that lasted three hours on Wednesday. The victory came a day after she overcame Hungary’s Panna Udvardy 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, using variation in her game to disrupt her opponent’s rhythm.
Against Vandromme, Montgomery had to withstand a determined challenge from the Belgian teenager, particularly after losing the second set. The contest extended into a deciding set under Chennai’s hot and humid conditions, but the American held her nerve to close out the match 7-5 and secure her place in the last eight.
Her performances in Chennai reflect a career shaped by both early success and significant setbacks. Raised in Washington DC by her single mother and grandmother, Montgomery credits the strong women in her family for shaping her outlook. “I definitely come from a household of strong, independent women and I wouldn’t change that for the world,” she said.
Her entry into competitive tennis came through a community outreach programme. Her mother discovered the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC) in College Park, Maryland, through an advertisement in The Washington Post. Montgomery, then five, received a full scholarship through a programme sponsored by GEICO in partnership with the centre.
She made rapid progress, winning the junior US Open title by the age of 17, turning professional and making her Grand Slam debut. However, the transition to the senior circuit brought its own challenges. In 2025, the year she broke into the world’s top 100, a persistent wrist problem required surgery and kept her away from competition for 10 months.
Montgomery has since rebuilt her career and won her maiden WTA Tour-level title at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in June. At 22, she is conscious of the need to maintain perspective while negotiating the demands of professional tennis. “Sometimes I forget how young I am and I try to keep that in perspective,” she said.
Her progress in Chennai represents another step in that comeback. Having negotiated two demanding matches in succession, Montgomery will now look to carry her form into the quarterfinals as she pursues another significant result on the WTA Tour.
