Amazing story of saving a child's life
Doctors of Kolkata Medical College and Hospital saved the life of a six-year-old child with their skill. A small magnet used in toys had got stuck in the child's lungs, causing him to cough continuously and have difficulty breathing. The name of the child is Arafat Ali, who is a resident of Baduria in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
During the examination of the child, X-ray and CT scan revealed that the magnet had passed through his windpipe and reached the right bronchus, which was a serious condition. Doctors attempted to remove the magnet through bronchoscopy, but were unsuccessful despite several attempts. The magnet was slipping again and again when held with forceps.
To save the child from difficulty in breathing, doctors performed tracheostomy, in which a small hole is made in the throat to create a path for breathing. Even after this it was not easy to remove the magnet. Doctors had the option of performing chest surgery, but they decided to try another solution first.
Doctors planned to use a powerful magnet to pull out the trapped magnet. For this he went to a local workshop in Maniktala, where artisan Prabhakar Karar prepared a special shaped magnet for him. This magnet was used with surgical forceps.
A six-member team of doctors successfully took out the object stuck in the lungs with the help of this special magnet. After this the child was kept in the ICU, and according to the hospital, now air is reaching both his lungs and his condition is improving. Along with doctors, the technical assistance of local artisans also proved important in this successful effort.
