Rajya Sabha Member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has described global warming as the biggest challenge facing the world, warning that rising temperatures are disrupting environmental balance and causing serious consequences.

He was addressing a program organized by the Innocent Hearts Group at its Green Model Town school in Jalandhar.

Seechewal said rising temperatures were accelerating the melting of glaciers. Referring to the recent destruction caused by the breaking off of a large section of a glacier in Nepal, he said humanity was bearing the consequences of interference with nature. Climate change, he added, was triggering devastating floods in some regions and drought-like conditions in others.

He also expressed concern over the widespread loss of human life caused by wars across the world. He observed that while weapons capable of destroying the world multiple times had been developed, access to clean drinking water and fresh air — essential for protecting human life — remained under threat.

Seechewal said it was the collective responsibility of everyone to preserve natural resources, particularly clean water and fresh air, for future generations. He emphasized that environmental protection must be treated as a shared responsibility of every member of society.

Appealing to school managements, he urged them to provide children with moral education alongside academic learning so that they could grow into responsible citizens who understood their duties towards society and the environment.
