Vetri Laptop Scheme: Rs 2,000 Crore for TN Students

For many first-generation college students in Tamil Nadu, finishing an assignment or attending an online class still means a cybercafé, a borrowed phone or a long wait at the college computer lab. The state government wants to change that, and it has put Rs 2,000 crore behind the effort.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has sanctioned the amount for the Vetri Laptop Scheme, which will give free laptops to students in higher education at government and government-aided institutions. A government order has granted administrative approval and set out detailed guidelines for the scheme, which was first announced in the 2026-27 state budget.

A wide net across disciplines

The scheme is broad. In the 2026-27 academic year, first- and second-year undergraduate and diploma students in eligible colleges will receive laptops. Courses covered include arts and science, engineering, polytechnic, industrial training, medicine, veterinary science, fisheries, agriculture and law.
