Popular soup urgently recalled from Tesco and Waitrose — ‘do not eat’

Tesco and Waitrose are among the major supermarkets recalling a popular product following a manufacturing defect. The fault means the product could produce an “unpleasant odour and flavour”.

Baxters has recalled its Chef Selections Cullen Skink after concerns that the can might swell and rupture. Customers who have purchased the soup have been strongly advised not to consume it, and to carefully dispose of it in the bin. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an official recall notice for the product across England and Wales.

It said: “A manufacturing fault has occurred which may result in spoilage causing unpleasant odour and flavour, swelling and possible rupture of the can.”

It further advised: “If you have bought the above product, do not eat it. Instead, dispose of the full can and product without opening. Carefully place the full can in a bag and dispose of it in an external bin.

“Contact Baxters Customer Care team via the details below for a replacement. For further information, please contact Baxters on 0800 389 8389 or e-mail CCUK@baxters.com.”

“No other Baxters products are affected by this recall. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Waitrose added: “Do not consume. Package up item. Return the product to your local Waitrose and Partners branch for a refund. Contact: Waitrose Customer Care 0800 188 884, Option 4 Or Baxters 0800 389 8389 and CCUK@baxters.com”.

“We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused.”

Why are products recalled?

If a food product has an issue, it may be withdrawn from shelves or recalled, in which case customers are asked to return it.

The FSA publishes recall notices to alert consumers and local authorities about concerns with particular foods. On occasion, a Food Alert for Action is released, giving local authorities information about specific measures to be taken on consumers’ behalf.
