Wagner encouraged by Köln’s attacking display despite Leverkusen defeat

Köln head coach René Wagner believes his side can take confidence from their performance against Bayer Leverkusen despite suffering a 2-1 defeat at the BayArena on Sunday.

The Billy Goats were unable to come away with a positive result, but Wagner was encouraged by the chances his side created against a strong Leverkusen outfit, while admitting they lacked the necessary quality in the final third at times.

“Both teams played with a lot of passion. We had chances in the opening minutes to score a goal ourselves. Sometimes today we lacked that final touch, that final pass,” Wagner explained after the game.

Despite the disappointment of defeat, the Köln coach was keen to emphasise the positives, insisting his players should take confidence from their ability to repeatedly threaten a very good opposition.

“We have to keep attacking with real passion. We saw that a lot today. Today we managed to create chances against a very good team time and again. That should give us confidence,” he added.

Wagner also highlighted the potential for further improvement in the attacking department, with the expected return of Ragnar Ache following the international break providing another boost to Köln’s options in the final third.

“We’re looking forward to Ragy returning after the international break so we can become even more dangerous in the opposition’s box,” he said.

“We can still create even more dangerous chances. We know that, and we’re continuing to work on it. But I think everyone in the stadium felt today that the boys keep trying and give it their all.”

There was also praise for Malek El Mala, who continued his promising run of form with another goal contribution. Wagner was particularly pleased with the youngster’s progress and the opportunity to see him sharing the pitch with his brother.

“I’m happy for Malek – two games, two goal contributions. That shows you can earn playing time through hard work. I’m happy for the two brothers, who are out on the pitch together and giving it their all,” Wagner remarked.

The Köln coach also reserved some encouraging words for Mikey Moore, praising the Tottenham loanee’s commitment and willingness to get stuck into the contest against Leverkusen.

“You could tell he threw himself into the challenges. He knew that would be important today. I’m sure he’ll get more opportunities to reward himself with points for scoring,” Wagner concluded.
