“1525 runs and 101 wickets in 33 matches”: BCCI picks 26-year-old as R Ashwin’s replacement for remaining two Tests vs Australia
Mumbai all-rounder Tanush Kotian has been named as R Ashwin’s replacement for the remaining two Tests against Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Ashwin retired from international cricket after the third red-ball game at the Gabba in Brisbane. Kotian is an off-spinner who is also handy with the bat. He is likely to leave for Australia on Tuesday.
Kotian toured Australia with the India A team and scored a duck and 44 runs in two innings. He took one wicket in the only contest he played.
Tanush played for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024. In the first game against Karnataka, he didn’t bat and conceded 73 runs from his nine overs. His performance does not reflect his actual talent, as he has an impressive track record in first-class cricket.
In the 33 matches, Kotian has scored 1525 runs and taken 101 wickets. He was named the Player of the Tournament for amassing 502 runs and taking 29 wickets in the Ranji Trophy 2023-2024. Batting at No. 10, he recorded a ton in the second quarterfinal against Baroda. In the semifinal against Tamil Nadu, he accumulated 89 not out. Kotian took seven wickets in the final to help Mumbai win their 42nd title.
He scored 64 and 114 against the Rest of India in the Irani Cup. His performance was behind Mumbai’s success. The match ended in a draw, but Mumbai was declared the winner on the basis of the first-innings lead.
