‘A bigger crisis than Hormuz is looming…’, who can be a headache for India? A big warning from the experts

The US-Iran peace deal has been finalized and the world’s long-running Strait of Hormuz crisis has finally come to an end. This sea route, which is crucial for meeting 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas needs, is now open after a long wait. Iranian oil tankers have been seen from it. The Hormuz crisis has been described as the biggest crisis in the history of the global oil market. But Vijay Gokhale, the former foreign minister of India, who was working as ambassador to China from January 2016 to October 2017, has given a serious warning. A bigger crisis than Hormuz is looming before India. What exactly is this crisis? What could be the threat to India? Let’s know in detail.

India should be ready

While the Hormuz crisis seems to be over after the finalization of the US-Iran peace deal, India should be prepared for another major crisis. Former Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale gave this warning during a discussion on his new book ‘China’s War’. “Because Taiwan is 5,000 kilometers away, we think it is not our concern. But I tell you, we are grossly underestimating the impact of the Malacca Straits crisis on our country,” he said.

‘Taiwan crisis bigger than Hormuz’

With the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, it is natural to think that the worst is over, but India’s vulnerability is not limited to West Asia. Former Foreign Secretary Gokhale said, “If you’re looking at Taiwan and thinking it’s too far away and we shouldn’t worry, think again. The impact of closing the Strait of Hormuz will be far less than the impact of a potential crisis in the Taiwan Strait.” He said, “They are not talking about war; if that happens, World War III will start, because America will be involved.”

How can this problem be solved for India?

Gokhale warned that if Taiwan implements the Hormuz strategy, trade in the Straits of Malacca will immediately come to a standstill, which will directly affect India. The Strait of Malacca is a narrow sea passage between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra, connecting the Andaman Sea to the South China Sea, making it one of the world’s most important sea lanes. A major portion of oil and gas imports from countries like China, Japan and South Korea pass through this strait. More than 80,000 ships pass through this strait every year.

Worst impact on IT services

Vijay Gokhale said that due to the Taiwan crisis, India’s IT industry could suffer a huge loss. Fifteen submarine cables from India to Silicon Valley lie in Taiwan, and China has cut three cables in the past two years. “We shouldn’t think that Taiwan is far away or that if China attacks, it’s not our problem. It’s a big problem for us,” he said.

Why so much discussion on the Taiwan crisis?

‘Dragon’ Behind Taiwan Crisis Talks; China has been preparing to take over Taiwan for years. In 2023, former CIA Director William Burns stated that Xi Jinping had instructed the PLA to be ready for a successful invasion of Taiwan by 2027, and that the Taiwan Crisis would occur if that happened. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly vowed to unify it, even by force if necessary.
