A look back at a moment with a decisive impact on media coverage

Paramount Pictures has dropped the first official trailer for September 5director Tim Fehlbaum’s historical drama following the broadcasters of ABC Sports TV covering the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics hostage situation. Back then, the so-called Black September terrorist group of Palestinian origin took the whole Olympic team from Israel hostage. The film shows the broadcasters as they shift focus from live sport reporting to covering the situation.

According to the official synopsis, “Through this lens, September 5 provides a fresh perspective on the live broadcast seen globally by an estimated one billion people at the time. At the heart of the story is Geoff (John Magaro), a young and ambitious producer striving to prove himself to his boss, the legendary TV executive Roone Arledge (Peter Sarsgaard). Together with German interpreter Marianne (Leonie Benesch) and his mentor Marvin Bader (Ben Chaplin), Geoff unexpectedly takes the helm of the live coverage. As narratives shift, time ticks away, and conflicting rumors spread, with the hostages’ lives hanging in the balance, Geoff grapples with tough decisions while confronting his own moral compass.”

Fehlbaum directed the film from a Moritz Binder screenplay. The film stars John Magaro, Peter Sarsgaard, Leonie Benesch, and Ben Chaplin, among others. September 5 had its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival and is slated for a November 29 release in select theatres in the US.
