VIDEO: Massive fire broke out in Gul Plaza, six including a firefighter died due to suffocation, 20 people were injured, many were in critical condition.
New Delhi. At least six people, including a firefighter, died in a massive fire that broke out at Gul Plaza shopping mall in Karachi, Pakistan late Saturday night. 20 people have been injured in this incident. The fire has not been completely controlled and the work of extinguishing the fire is still going on. Rescue officials said the people died due to suffocation due to smoke inside the building. The condition of many of the injured is said to be serious. All the injured have been admitted to Civil Hospital Karachi.

Karachi’s Chief Fire Officer said that shops and warehouses on the ground floor were completely engulfed in fire, following which officials declared the incident a category three fire. Fire tenders were called from across the city and snorkel vehicles were also deployed to rescue people trapped inside the building. Officials said the fire spread to the third floor of the plaza, which also houses a basement market. Rescue officials warned that the structure of the building has become dangerously weak due to the fire and it could collapse at any time. Gul Plaza Traders Association said that 80 to 100 people are still feared trapped inside. Pakistan’s rescue spokesperson Hasanul Haseeb Khan said that as soon as the news of the fire was received, fire, rescue teams, ambulances and fire brigade vehicles were immediately sent. Chief Officer Humayun Khan said that about 40 percent of the fire has been controlled. Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif have expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Expressed condolences to the families of the victims and directed the authorities to provide immediate assistance. Also directed to ensure best medical care to the injured.
