At least three people were killed and several injured in clashes between protesters from the religious minority Alawi community and the opposition in the Syrian city of Homs on Sunday. Health officials gave this information.

The clashes came two days after a bomb blast during prayers at an Alvi mosque in the city of Homs killed eight and injured 18. Thousands of protesters gathered in Lazikia, Tartous and other locations. Syrian state television news reported that two members of the security forces were injured when a grenade was thrown at a police station in the Tartous region. In Lajikia, vehicles of security forces were set on fire. State news agency SANA later reported that a member of the security forces was killed in the shooting. According to local health officials, three people were killed and 60 were injured in the attack.
Fundamentalists wanted to target people of Alvi sect
According to officials, preliminary investigations indicate that explosive devices were planted in Friday’s bomb attack at the Homs mosque, but the identity of the suspect has not yet been made public. The last rites of the deceased were performed on Saturday. A lesser-known group calling itself Saraya Ansar al-Sunna claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on its Telegram channel, indicating that the attack was aimed at members of the Alawi sect.

Sunday’s demonstration was called by Alvi Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, who lives abroad. He is the head of the ‘Supreme Alawite Islamic Council’. An Associated Press (AP) photographer observed pro-government counter-protesters throwing stones at Alawi protesters in Lazikia. Security forces tried to separate the two sides and fired shots in the air to disperse them.
